What is BARCStoberfest?

BARCStoberfest is an annual, large scale, pet-friendly festival and fundraiser that benefits the lifesaving programs and animal care at the Baltimore Animal Rescue and Care Shelter (BARCS). Sponsorships and team fundraising leading up to BARCStoberfest raise critical funding for Maryland’s highest volume, open admission shelter serving 12,000 animals per year.

When and where is BARCStoberfest? 

The 15th annual BARCStoberfest is on Saturday, October 26, 2019 in Baltimore’s beautiful Patterson Park near the historical Pagoda building. See our Event Schedule for a run-down of the day's activities, including start times. 

What's the difference between individual and team fundraising?

BARCStoberfest is supported by what we call peer-to-peer donations (or "friends asking friends"). This online fundraising is critical to the success of our event. Whether you decide to raise money on your own or be a part of a team, everyone creates their own personalized fundraising page. Teams then have their own page that is made up of members: friends, family, co-workers or anyone you choose to invite. Each team member also has their own personal fundraising page. Team members can direct donors to give on their personal page or to the team page. All money raised on individual pages also funnels into the team's overall fundraising goal.

Here's an example: Bailey Deacon is the captain of and a member of "Team BARCS Volunteers, Fosters and Staff." Within the team are the pages of each team member.  You can see Bailey's page on the team page. All of the money Bailey raises on her own counts towards the team's overall goal. In this example, the team's goal is $20,000, and Bailey's individual goal is $1,000. Donors can also choose to give to the team's page if they have a connection with all team members.

How do I sign up for the 5K? 

You can run with a four-legged friend, by yourself or with your fundraising teammates. Runners must first register through Charm City Run. In your confirmation email, you will be prompted to sign up for our peer-to-peer fundraising module to help us reach our $350,000 event goal. We hope you'll take part in the fun of fundraising! Every step that’s taken and every dollar that’s raised saves a life at BARCS. All money raised from BARCStoberfest goes directly to care for the over 12,000 animals who come to BARCS each year.

Click the “Register” button, which is on the left side about halfway down, just under “Join the Fun.” You can either fundraise as an individual or start a team. Teams can consist of runners, walkers and a combination of both!

How do I sign up for the one mile walk?

Those who wish to participate in the one mile walk can register by creating a personal (or team) fundraising page and collecting at least $40 in donations. Walkers receive an ultra-soft T-shirt, a doggie bandana, free entry to our dog-friendly beer garden and e-coupons to local pet stores and businesses. Starting a fundraising page is easy... and lifesaving! Each dollar you raise will feed, shelter and provide care for homeless animals in Baltimore City. Ask your friends and family to support your steps while you walk for the animals and give your pup some great exercise in beautiful Patterson Park! ***Please be sure to raise/donate your $40 participation minimum by the time you come to get your shirt and "race" bib, whether that is at early packet pick-up or at Patterson Park on race day. 

Do I have to pay to attend? What if I don’t want the T-shirt and I just want to bring my dog for the activities?

BARCStoberfest is our largest event of the year and it enables you, our supporters, to fundraise on behalf of our animals. BARCS is the largest shelter in the state of Maryland, taking in over 12,000  animals each year. Without the much needed donations from BARCStoberfest, we would not be able to care for these animals, many of which come to us sick, injured and in need of urgent care. This is why we ask each person who attends BARCStoberfest to either raise or donate a minimum of $40. That gets you entry into the one mile fun walk, the event t-shirt, the doggie bandana and one free drink in the beer garden. 

Where/when do I get my T-shirt?

Race packet pickup, which includes your t-shirt and doggy bandana, is available on:

If those times don’t work with your schedule, you may pick up your packet on the morning of the race at BARCStoberfest from 7:30-8:30 a.m. Please note that race-day pick-up will close promptly at 8:30 a.m. To avoid long lines at BARCStoberfest, we encourage all runners and walkers to pick up on Thursday or Friday at one of the above venues.

Can I pick up the race packets and T-shirts for my entire team?

Yes! If you pick up at one of our pre-race pick up events, you can pick up for your entire team. You MUST have a complete list of those who are registered, including first and last names. Make sure to get their shirt sizes ahead of time!

Do people have to donate online? What should I do if I receive cash and checks?

Donations can be made online with a credit card or in person via cash or check. If your donors wish to mail checks directly to BARCS or you have checks to mail, please include a note that the donation should be applied towards your fundraising page and mail to: BARCStoberfest, 301 Stockholm Street, Baltimore, MD 21230. We will update your fundraising page with the donation once it is received. You can also turn in donations at BARCStoberfest on Saturday, October 26 starting at 8 a.m.

How can I add my cash and check donations to my webpage so that my progress bar is updated?

BARCS will enter all “offline” donations (i.e., cash and checks) that we receive prior to the event. Once we get them from you, we will add them to your page and your progress bar move will move. 

Where do I park?

Parking is free around Patterson Park. Keep in mind that we are expecting several thousand people at this event, so this may impact traffic and parking. We suggest looking on side streets near Patterson Park and walking a few blocks to the event. BARCStoberfest is held in the northwest corner of the park, closest to the Pagoda. Refer to the event map for more information. 5K runners and one mile walkers may want to park closer to the start of the run/walk. 

I can’t jog and one mile is too far for my dog/me to walk. Should we still attend?

Yes! Remember, the goal for this year’s BARCStoberfest is to raise $350,000. Many people will be raising money in support of the cause, regardless of whether they can attend the event. And if you don’t feel comfortable walking a mile, no problem! There are lots of activities, vendors and contests to take part in.

Can I bring my dog? Do I need to bring proof of vaccines?

Yes, this is an event for dogs (other pets are welcome too!). We do not require proof of vaccines, but for your dog’s safety, you should be sure they are current on all vaccines. NO RETRACTABLE LEASHES.

Will there be food at BARCStoberfest?

Yes! We’ll have many great local food trucks at BARCStoberfest, including vegetarian and vegan options, as well as our famous bake sale! Click here to see the full vendor list.
